The Leadville Trail 100, often called the "Race Across the Sky," is a brutal yet beautiful 100-mile ultramarathon through the rugged heart of Colorado's Rocky Mountains. With a course that climbs and descends over 15,000 feet, peaking at an astounding 12,600 feet at Hope Pass, it's a test of grit, resilience, and patience. On August 16th, 2025, I'll be lacing up for my tenth finish to conquer this beast.
My first Leadville 100 in 2010 was a challenge, but little did I know it was just the beginning of a transformation. My daughters weren't even born yet when I first crossed that finish line, exhausted but exhilarated. Over these 15 years, Leadville has become more than just a race; it's a family tradition. My girls have grown up alongside my training, witnessing the dedication, the setbacks, and the triumphs. This journey has literally built a family, one mile at a time, creating memories that are deeply etched in all of us.
Beyond the miles and the memories, Leadville holds an even deeper significance for me. During this tenure, I found sobriety. The focus, discipline, and sheer mental fortitude required for ultra-running became a powerful force in my recovery. It taught me how to lean into discomfort, to keep moving forward even when every fiber of my being wanted to quit, and to find strength in perseverance. These lessons, honed on the unforgiving trails of Leadville, have profoundly impacted every aspect of my life.
Furthermore, this journey inspired me to launch a business dedicated to helping others achieve their own ambitious goals. I've been able to share the lessons learned from the trails – the importance of setting big audacious goals, breaking them down into manageable steps, and finding the unwavering determination to see them through – with countless individuals. Leadville, and ultras in general, have been my greatest teachers, revealing the depths of my own grit, resilience, and patience, qualities that seamlessly translate to everyday life, business, and personal growth.
This monumental tenth run isn't just about me. It's about giving back. This year, I'm honored to be raising money for Bigger Than The Trail (BTTT), an incredible organization that uses trail running as a platform to advocate for mental health. Their mission is to enrich the lives of individuals struggling with mental health by providing educational support and access to treatment options, regardless of their financial situation. My goal is to raise $1,000, which will directly provide counseling sessions for those who desperately need to talk to someone but lack the financial ability to get the help they deserve.
This 1,000-mile achievement wouldn't be possible without a countless number of people who have shown up, stood around, and waited for hours for just a few minutes of interaction as I passed through aid stations. This truly is a team sport, and I'm blessed with the best teammates anyone could ask for. From my family to my pacers, my crew, and all the friends who've cheered me on, thank you. You are all part of this incredible journey.
As I prepare for this landmark run, I invite you to be a part of it. Whether you share my story, send words of encouragement, or consider contributing to Bigger Than The Trail, every bit makes a difference. Let's make this tenth Leadville not just a personal triumph, but a collective effort to support mental health and empower others to find their own grit on their paths to recovery and fulfillment.
